A new study is suggesting that a new, more affordable and safer version of Voltaren, called diclofenac sodium, may help with painful, and even painful, arthritis. The findings, published in the journal Pain, are based on a study presented at the American Academy of Rheumatology (AAR) and the European Association of Rheumatology and osteoarthritis (EARO) conference.
Voltaren is approved by the FDA to treat arthritis, but it’s also a pain reliever and anti-inflammatory medication. But it’s not a good option for people with arthritis, and diclofenac should be prescribed in patients with severe pain or inflammatory arthritis, as well as those with other arthritis-related problems.
The research was led by Dr. Andrew J. Johnson, M. D., a urologist with the University of California at San Francisco who led the study. The study, which looked at diclofenac sodium in patients with mild to moderate arthritis, was published in the January 2016 issue ofJ Pain.
Dr. Johnson said diclofenac sodium, the active ingredient in Voltaren, has been available on the market for years and is available at pharmacies and grocery stores without a prescription. “I think this is a very low-cost option for patients,” he said.
Voltaren’s popularity has been a significant factor in the ongoing battle for pain management in arthritis. In a previous study of diclofenac sodium, researchers measured a drug’s effect on inflammation and cartilage in arthritic patients.
“It’s a good alternative to anti-inflammatories,” Dr. Johnson said. “I don’t see any problem in people with osteoarthritis, even with arthritis.”
Johnson said there is some evidence that diclofenac sodium may provide more effective pain relief for those who have osteoarthritis and other inflammatory diseases. For example, in a study published in theNew England Journal of Medicinein 2002, the use of diclofenac sodium reduced pain and stiffness, a symptom that arthritis patients often complain of. (The pain reliever was a pain reliever called ibuprofen.)
Researchers found that diclofenac sodium increased osteoarthritis pain.
“I think the way that diclofenac sodium works is because it blocks the enzymes that produce inflammation,” Dr. “It can slow down the production of inflammatory substances, which could lead to inflammation.”
In other words, diclofenac sodium, as the name implies, is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that can relieve pain, but it can also reduce inflammation.
It’s also been used as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) for rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and inflammatory arthritis.
“It’s also available on the market and can be used for some other purposes,” Dr. “I think it’s a very low-cost option for people, but I think it’s something that needs to be investigated.”
In addition to diclofenac sodium, the study’s results are consistent with the research showing diclofenac sodium may help with pain, as well as reduce inflammation. “It’s not a cure for pain,” Dr.
But Dr. Johnson said a more affordable and safer option for people with arthritis could improve their quality of life and reduce their overall risk of developing osteoarthritis and other inflammatory diseases. The drug may also help with arthritis.
“I would like to see diclofenac sodium be taken as a daily pill, as opposed to a pill,” Dr. “I think it’s very safe to take as long as you want to have pain relief.”
The study authors also note that diclofenac sodium has not been studied in other populations.
“It’s definitely something that needs to be investigated,” Dr. “It’s important to have information on how to use diclofenac sodium safely and appropriately.”
Johnson is a professor of urology at Emory University School of Medicine.
